NATO Partnership and Corporative Security Committed has awarded the project "High Energy Calcium-Oxygen Batteries" in the framework of the Science and Peace Security (SPS) Programme. The project involves the partnerships of the three institutions:
- Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology, University of Zagreb, Croatia (prof. dr. Zoran Mandić)
- Institute of Chemistry, Technology and Metallurgy, University of Belgrade, Serbia (prof. dr, Vladimir Panić)
- Department of Physics, Chalmers Univesity of Technolgy, Gothenburg, Sweden (prof. dr. Patrik Johansson)
The project aims to investigate the feasibility of developing the novel concepts of calcium - oxygen (Ca - O2/air) battery cells outperforming contemporary lithium-ion batteries. The activities in this project will be pursued by fundamental and rational materials science-centered research and coupled with evaluating relevant performance indicators by electrochemical analysis methods and battery cycling. Overall this project comprises many challenges in the research and development of stable calcium/electrolyte interfaces/interphases, creating electro-catalysts to promote the oxygen reduction/evolution reactions in this complex environment, as well as lab cell construction to enable proof-of-concept.
